Cyril Good was born in Walton on the Naze, Essex on 22 September 1881, the son of Edward (a Ships Steward) and Susan Seely Good. On leaving school he trained and qualified as a fitter and turner. He joined the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer Fourth Class on 10 February 1903. He served in a number of ships including HMS SUTLEJ, HMS HEARTY, the battleship HMS BARHAM, HMS TAMAR, HMS WOODCOCK & HMS HALCYON.

Cyril Good joined submarines as an Engine Room Artificer Third Class on 2 November 1909. He was drafted to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS BONAVENTURE ‘for Submarines‘ on 15 October 1912 and then joined HMS C1 on 5 August 1914. He served in C1 until 29 July 1915 and joined the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MAIDSTONE on 30 July 1915. Cyril Good next served in the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA from 25 April 1916 by which time he had been promoted to Chief Engine Room Artificer Second Class.

Promotion to Artificer Engineer followed on 1 October 1917, when he was appointed to HMS PEMBROKE. Cyril Good was awarded a Mention in Despatches – see London Gazette dated 2 November 1917. On 27 May 1918 he joined HMS L16 as the Engineer. On 1 September 1921 he was serving in HMS TITANIA ‘for Group A Submarines in Reserve’. This was followed by appointments to HMS L7 as the Engineer on 6 December 1922 and HMS L19 as the Engineer in April 1923. Cyril Good was appointed to HMS L8 as the Engineer on 8 August 1923.

A year later, on 13 August 1924 he was appointed to HMS M1 as the Engineer. On 12 November 1925, M1 was lost with all hands following a collision in the Channel with the merchant ship SS VIDAR, in which the 12-inch gun was dislodged, and the submarine flooded through a hull penetration. Cyril Good was the husband of Mary Emma Good (née Everett).
