Anthony Green was born on 9 January 1916, the son of Cecil Moulton Green (a manufacturers agent) and Irene Margaret Green (née Goddard) of Golders Green, London. After leaving school he was a Cadet at Pangbourne Nautical College in Berkshire and ‘The Journal of Commerce’ in its 28 December 1931 issue reported that ‘the highest number of individual marks was gained by Cadet Anthony Henry Moulton Green of the Nautical College, Pangbourne to whom the first money prize of £15 is awarded.’

After Pangbourne he joined the Royal Navy and was promoted to Midshipman on 1 September 1933.  In 1934 he was studying on his Lieutenant’s Courses at Portsmouth and was then appointed to the cruiser HMS KENT, on the China Station, on 25 May 1934.  He was promoted Sub Lieutenant on 1 June 1936 and joined the Submarine Course at HMS DOLPHIN on 26 April 1937. On completion of training he was appointed to HMS ODIN at Hong Kong on 7 August 1937.

Anthony Green was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October 1937 and in August 1939 he was appointed to ‘Submarine HMS OLYMPUS as Fourth Hand’.  On 14 October 1939 he was married to Miss Eleanor (Bunty) Drummond in St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Singapore. He next joined the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY at Alexandria in Egypt on 16 September 1940 and then ‘HMS REGULUS as First Lieutenant’. REGULUS sailed from Alexandria on 16 November 1940 with orders to conduct a patrol in the Gulf of Taranto and to return to Alexandria on 6 December 1940. The orders were changed and, on 18 November 1940 REGULUS was  ordered to patrol in the lower Adriatic instead and, on 23 November 1943, in the Straits of Otranto.

HMS REGULUS did not arrive in Alexandia on 6 December 1940 as expected and was presumed to have been lost with all hands, probably due to hitting a mine in in the lower Adriatic or Straits of Otranto. Anthony Green is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Panel 36, Column 1.
