John Griffin was born at Swindon, Wiltshire on 15 April 1896, the son of George and Sarah Ann Griffin of Liddington, Wiltshire. Prior to his submarine service he served at the Battle of Jutland in the battlecruiser, HMS TIGER. He died of pneumonia in Brindisi and is buried at the Bari War Cemetery.
