Leading Seaman Laurence Frank Groves, DSM, C/J 101563, died on 27 April 1942 when HMS URGE was lost after striking a German mine off Malta.  He had previously served with the CO of HMS URGE, Lt Cdr Tomkinson, in HMS THAMES, pre-War.

He was born on 25 November 1905 to Frank and Rose Groves, and was husband of Gladys Winifred Groves of Fleetwood Lancashire.

He was awarded the DSM on 2 December 1941 for service in HMS URGE and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent and the HMS URGE Memorial, Malta.
