Frank Hall was born on 9 October 1896 at Marylebone, London, the eldest of five surviving children of Robert Hall, a ‘pianoforte and music packer’ and later a house painter, and his wife Annie Eliza (née Podger).
He joined the Royal Navy on 2 October 1912 at the Devonport Boys’ training ship, HMS IMPREGNABLE, and was rated Boy Telegraphist in May 1913. In November 1913 he joined the pre-dreadnought battleship HMS KING EDWARD VII where he was rated Ordinary Telegraphist on his 18th birthday. Later in October 1914 he moved to her sister ship HMS DOMINION where he was rated Telegraphist in February 1915 and Leading Telegraphist in March 1916. DOMINION was part of the 3rd Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet until May 1916 and then transferred to the Nore.
He joined HMS DOLPHIN on 13 March 1917, and in April was transferred to the submarine depot ship HMS VULCAN for HMS E35. VULCAN was at that time operating her own flotilla of six E-class and two H-class submarines from Berehaven in south-west Ireland. Frank Hall’s service history notes that he was ‘washed overboard and drowned’ on 29 October 1917. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
