Reginald Howes was born on 26 December 1921 at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.  He was the son of Reginald and Elizabeth Howes of Great Crosby, Lancashire.  He was educated at Chard School in Somerset and in 1939 joined the Pacific Steam Navigation Company as a Cadet and served on SS Losada and Orbita, running from Liverpool to South America.

In 1941 he joined the RNR as a Midshipman and was serving in the battleship HMS KING GEORGE V when he volunteered for submarines.

He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
