Derrick Ives was born on 28 September 1896 in Leeds, the third son of Alfred and Beatrice Ives of Roundhay, Leeds. After training at RNC Osborne he served in the battleship HMS HINDUSTAN, before volunteering for submarines.  He was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN for submarine training on 1 February 1917 followed by appointment to the depot ship HMS ALECTO in July of that year as First Lieutenant of HMS H10.  

He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 28.  In St John’s Church, Roundhay there is a stained glass window dedicated to his memory and that of his elder brother, Kenneth, a subaltern in the 8th Bn, the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’ Own) who died of typhoid in December 1914.
