George Jenkinson was born on 13 August 1888, the son of the late G E and Mrs Jenkinson of Hadley, Herts. He joined the Royal Navy in January 1905.

After time in HMS BULWARK and HMS IMPLACABLE, Sub Lieutenant Jenkinson joined submarine training in September 1909. His first appointment to a specific submarine was to HMS C5 in command as a Lieutenant in August 1913. In April 1916, he was appointed to command HMS H3.

H3 was on patrol in the Adriatic, off the Austrian Naval Base at Cattaro on 15 July 1916, when the submarine struck a mine, which exploded, resulting in serious damage to H3. The submarine sank with no survivors.

George Jenkinson was the husband of Winifred Jenkinson of Arkley House, Barnet, Hertfordshire.  He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial on Panel No. 11.
