Geoffrey Lane died as a result of an accident whilst making a 100ft ascent in the Submarine Escape Training Tank (SETT). According to a report in the Daily Mirror of 4 April 1974, the Royal Navy was criticised by a coroner for risking the lives of young sailors and said that they were taking “very grave medical risks” with submarine trainees. Geoffrey was the fifth trainee to die in twenty years at the submarine base at Gosport. Escape training was suspended pending the outcome of an inquiry which was investigating the dangers.
