Frederick Layzell was born at Wickham St Pauls, Essex on 15 February 1896, the son of Mr and Mrs John Layzell of Little Maplestead, Halstead, Essex.  He joined the Royal Navy in 1911 and before joining submarines he served aboard the light cruiser HMS CHESTER at the Battle of Jutland.

He married Lilias Maria Bradley of Birkenhead in 1916.  Their son Frederick was born in 1917.  He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial Panel 27 and on the Birkenhead war memorial.

  1. That’s my great uncle. His brother Cecil was also killed in WW1.
    Don’t think he ever saw his baby son, who l managed to trace to Liverpool and spoke to him on the telephone shortly before he died.
    I regularly visit his parents grave at Lt Maplestead church. He and his brother are mentioned on a plaque inside the church!
    I enclose a photo of the Layzell family taken around 1900. The girl is my grandmother Gertie Layzell who married Arthur Cook in 1918. My father Cecil Cook was born in 1918.
