Cecil Mee was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on 17 January 1890, the son of Leopold George Mee and Emily Mee (née King) of Palmer’s Green, London. On 28 November 1908, he joined the Merchant Marine for a three-year apprenticeship onboard SS TUSKAR. Subsequently, he served in SS OPHIR, SS OSTERLEY & SS OBI. Having gained his Mates Ticket, he served as Second Mate in SS GLENLOCHY, SS PORT PHILLIP and SS CAYO SOTO.
Cecil Mee joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Chatham on 3 December 1914 and was appointed to HMS COLUMBINE. He was promoted to Acting Temporary Lieutenant, RNR, on 5 June 1915 and appointed to Submarine E19 as Navigating Officer. E19 left Newcastle for the Baltic on 4 September 1915. to be part of the Baltic Flotilla based on the Russian Submarine Depot Ship DVINA at Reval. On 26 December 1915 he left Submarine E19 and he was awarded the Russian Orders of St. Vladimir 4th Class and St. Anne 3rd Class for his Baltic Flotilla service
Mee was appointed to HMS PEMBROKE (the Royal Naval Barracks) at Chatham on 22 January 1916 and to HMS BACCHANTE in February 1917. He was appointed to HMS BOMBALA on 1 September 1917. Cecil Mee is reported to have died on 25 April 1918 being killed in action when HMS BOMBALA was sunk by a U-Boat off the West Coast of Africa.
He was the husband of Blanch Ethel Mee (née Curtis) of Hatfield Heath, Harlow, Essex. Cecil Mee is commemorated on the Chatham Naval War Memorial on Panel No 30.
