Richard Millard died when the tender ELFIN, which was conveying about 100 libertymen from Harwich to the depot ship HMS THAMES, collided with submarine HMS C8 which was manoeuvring and heading for Felixtowe. The tender sank within five minutes and he was drowned along with three other members of the crew of HMS C8.
