Born in Bangalore, Madras, India, on 25 March 1908, Lewis Peter Moore was the son of Pierce Lanquisite Moore and Muriel Moore.  He joined the Royal Navy at Dartmouth as a Cadet in September 1921.  Promoted to the rank of Midshipman on 15 January 1926, he joined the Cruiser HMS DESPATCH (Fifth Cruiser Squadron, China Station) for sea training on 1 Sep 26. He was later appointed to the Submarine Course at HMS DOLPHIN on 31 Aug 29.

Promoted to Lieutenant on 1 June 1930, Moore was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS DOUGLAS (1st Submarine Flotilla) at Malta ‘for Submarine HMS L18 as the Navigator’ on 20 Sep 30.  This was followed by an appointment to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA (6th Submarine Flotilla) at Portland where he joined HMS H44 as the First Lieutenant on 18 August 1931.  He was then sent to the Far East on 1 September 1933 to join the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY (4th Submarine Flotilla) in Hong Kong where he became First Lieutenant of HMS PROTEUS.

He returned to the United Kingdom when appointed to HMS DOLPHIN for the Commanding Officers Qualifying Course (COQC) on 31 August 1936 where his ‘Teacher’, as the instructor of the course is known colloquially, was Lieutenant Commander WR Fell.  On successful completion of his COQC Lewis Moore was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA (6th Submarine Flotilla) at Portland ‘for Submarine HMS H34 in Command’ to date 11 December 1936.

On 13 December 1937, he was appointed to the 5th Cruiser Squadron, China Station for HMS BIRMINGHAM for his “big ship time”.  Promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 1 June 1938, on 15 October 1939 he returned to Submarines when appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY (4th Submarine Flotilla) at Hong Kong ‘for Submarines’ and, on 15 May 1940, to HMS TERROR (4th Submarine Flotilla) at Singapore to HMS RAINBOW in Command.

After the outbreak of War with Italy HMS MEDWAY and Submarines of the 4th Submarine Flotilla were sent to the Mediterranean to be based at Alexandria in Egypt. On 4 October while attacking a convoy, Rainbow collided with the Italian MV Antonietta Costa. Lewis Moore died on that day when HMS RAINBOW was sunk with All Hands.

Lewis Moore left a widow, Pamela Moore (née Dorman).
