Able Seaman

George Newby was born in Toxteth Park, Lancashire, on 29 June 1922, the son of John William and Alice Agnes Newby.  He joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman at HMS RALEIGH on 12 June 1940.

He appears to have volunteered for submarines as he was drafted to HMS DOLPHIN on 18 February 1941 and then to the submarine depot ship HMS MEDWAY as Ship’s Company on 18 May 1941, where he was rated Able Seaman on 12 June 1941.  He joined HMS TRIUMPH on 1 January 1942 but lost his life just over a week later when the submarine was lost with all hands.

He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel 66, Column 1.

Note: The Triumph Association website notes: “George was recorded in the casualty list as an AB, but is wearing a Leading Seaman’s anchor on his left sleeve, so must have been rated up as Acting Leading Seaman.”  This would perhaps be surprising after just 6 months as an AB, and it certainly has not been noted on his Service Certificate.
