Jack Roberts was born in Perth, Western Australia on 15 December 1887, the sixth son, and one of twelve children, of George and Sarah Ann Roberts (née Harrison) who emigrated from Manchester in 1877.  He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 8 January 1915 at Liverpool.  After training at HMS FISGARD and service in the armoured cruiser HMS ESSEX, he joined submarines in 1916.

He is buried in Faslane Cemetery and commemorated on the Commemorative Roll at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
