John Sanford was born at Dorking, Surrey on 27 April 1882, the son of Henry and Edith Sanford of Dene Street, Dorking. He was educated at St Martin’s Church of England School for Boys in Dorking and joined the Royal Navy on 27 April 1900. In 1913 he married Ellen Bassford of Atherstone, Warwickshire; they had a son, John Henry, born in 1913. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 13.
