Ernest Smith was born at West Hartlepool on 4 March 1892, the son of Charles and Mary Smith of Haverton Hill, Middlesbrough. He died on 23 October 1918 when he was washed off the casing and drowned as the HMS K10 was entering Rosyth Dockyard. He is buried at Edinburgh Seafield Cemetery.
