Leonard Smith was the son of William and E Smith of Ramsgate. He married Dorothy Staddon on 6 July 1915 at St Andrews Church, Cobham, Surrey and a daughter, Dorothy Olive Edith was born on 13 July 1916.
He died in HMS E4 on 15 August 1916 after a collision whilst dived with E41 during exercises. He is buried at Shotley Cemetery, Suffolk.
Smith’s widow married William Gladstone Cleaver who served in HMS C3 and was awarded the DSM for his part in the Zeebrugge raid of 23 April 1918.
