John Steele was an Engine Department Overseer in Fairfields yard.  He made an escape attempt from the flooded after ends of the submarine with Engineer Lieutenant Arthur Lane. Both men apparently reached the surface but were washed away by the tide and drowned.

John Steele’s body was never recovered; he is commemorated on the K13 memorial at Faslane Cemetery.
