William Tatham was born in Natal, the son of Lt Col the Honourable Frederick Spence Tatham, DSO, of Parkside, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, the Tatham’s being a well-known Natal and South African family.

He volunteered to join the Royal Navy to serve in submarines and subsequently was appointed as First Lieutenant of HMS H3, at just 19 years of age, the youngest First Lieutenant serving in the Royal Navy at the time.  He died when H3 was sunk by a mine in the Adriatic.

William’s brother was killed serving in the South African Infantry three days later.
