Robert Usher was born on 15 May 1924, the son of Lieutenant Ronald James and Alice Margaret Usher. He joined the Royal Navy and was appointed Midshipman on 1 September 1941 and served in the cruisers HMS DIOMEDE and HMS NORFOLK. He then joined submarines and was appointed to HMS TELEMACHUS on 2 February 1944 and served in the Far East. By 16 January 1945 he had been promoted to Lieutenant. He was Mentioned in Despatches (see London Gazette dated 24 July 1945) ‘for Far East War Patrols’.

Post war he served in the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MAIDSTONE and in HMS SENTINEL. Robert Usher of Aravraigh, Oban, is reported to have died of illness in Northwood, Middlesex, on 29 April 1947. He was the husband of Jane Usher (née Hall) of Ryton on Tees, County Durham. They were married in County Durham on 3 September 1945. He is buried in the Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery in Grave No. 1709.
