Alfred Whitehorne was born at Wallingford, Berkshire on 29 September 1897.  He was the son of George and Eliza Harriet Whitehorne of 17 St Johns Road, Wallingford. He joined the Royal Navy on 17 April 1913 at HMS GANGES.  He drowned in the Mediterranean off Pyrgos when a dinghy he was in capsized. The report into the drowning stated that he was missing believed drowned along with ERA John Lennon (q.v.), also from HMS E25. No further trace of of men or boat was found, its loss the result of a sudden gale without warning just before dark. No Court of Inquiry was held as no further evidence could be obtained.  He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 29 and on a memorial at the Capuccini-Kalkara Naval Cemetery in Malta..
