Reginald Wilshaw was the son of Mr. F. L. Wilshaw of  49, High Street, Longdon. He served in HMS CACHALOT and died in a canoeing accident on 23 May 1974.

According to reports in the Birmingham Daily Post of 25 May 1974 and Report & Death Notices in the Rugely Times of 1 June 1974, “A 27 years old Longdon man was killed taking part in a canoeing exercise with the Royal Navy at Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Reginald Frederick Wilshaw, had been in the Navy since leaving school.  He first joined as a cadet at the age of 14 and has served in several countries.  He was married to a Portsmouth girl and had three young children.”

  1. I was on this canoeing accident in 1974 also. I was responsible for pulling one of the Canadian submariners out of the water as he was hypothermic and losing consciousness. We washed up near a home on the river and the occupant was an emergency nurse who knew what to do and saved Wally. I had lost feeling in my legs as the water was just above freezing and it took a while before I could stand up on my own. Still seems like it happened yesterday.

  2. I am Canadian and doing research on the death of LS Wilshaw for The Naval Museum of Halifax here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am looking for a picture of LS Wilshaw and the location of the Cemetery he is buried in. I have attached a picture of two Canadians who laid a wreath on his grave in 1975. I sailed with both men in the picture in HMCS Okanagan. Thanks.
