  1. Petty Officer Herbert Henry Young is my daddy. I was 2 years 3 months old when his submarine Unbeaten was sunk.
Growing up and asking about my daddy, my mum told me his submarine was bombed after they were coming back after a successful mission. She was told this by the Admiralty and that’s what I fully believed up until the age of 67. While searching the website for information it came to light that Unbeaten had been sunk by “friendly fire” – and in fact it was a Wellington Bomber manned by 172 Squadron. The shock of learning this after all the years I had believed otherwise I couldn’t carry on researching about the Unbeaten or the Young family.history. I cried for three days as I was so bereft. I never told my Mum the real truth of the Unbeaten as at that time she was 89 years old I couldn’t see the point in opening old wounds for her. Also my daddy’s older brother, George Edward Young was in the Wellington Bombers (I don’t want to know the Squadron!) and I couldn’t help wondering if he was in the plane that bombed the Unbeaten. Such an awful thought. He too was killed whilst flying over France. My sadness was even more compounded! Sometimes it’s best not to know the details I think. But I still wonder and hope I’m wrong!
