HMS A3 (Lt F C Ormand in temporary command) was lost, with all hands, on 6 February 1912 after colliding with HMS HAZARD during a mock torpedo firing exercise conducted off the Isle of Wight. Lt Craven, the regular CO of A3, was absent on leave at the time.
Four submarine officers under training who were embarked at the time were also lost. Thirteen of the fourteen victims were buried at Haslar Hospital Cemetery in Gosport, close to the A1 graves. Lt D P C Campbell was buried in Oban, Scotland.
Nearly 3 months after the incident, the salvaged A3 was declared unfit for further service.
