Turkish officers Inspect E15 after her capture

HMS E15 (Lt Cdr Theodore S Brodie) ran aground at Kephez Point whilst attempting to make passage through the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmora on 17 April 1915. The submarine was subsequently shelled by the Turkish forts in the area. During the shelling, the Commanding Officer and five of the crew were killed and a further six were wounded.

Of those who survived the shelling (and were taken prisoner) another eight died as prisoners of war in Turkey. Those who survived the experience commented on the cruelty and hardship suffered whilst in captivity.

Following the grounding E15, was seriously damaged by torpedoes fired by the Royal Navy to prevent the submarine being recovered and refitted by the Turkish Navy.
