On 22 June 1917 at 0500, Sub Lt M S Graham was washed overboard from the bridge of HMS G8 (Lt G F Tryon) whilst the submarine was hove to in a storm near the northern tip of the Shetlands. The subsequent search failed to find him.
HMS G8 sailed from the Tees on 27 December 1917 escorted by the destroyer HMS MEDEA. Her patrol orders were to search for 2 German armed steamships and a Torpedo Boat that had been reported east of Hessele in the Kattegat. G8 was reported overdue on 8 January 1918 and it is assumed that she struck a mine in the North Sea and was lost with All Hands.
