According to the Shields Daily News of 23 February 1959, a sailor was killed and five other people hurt when the taxi in which they were riding hit a lamp standard in Osborne Road, Portsmouth.

Francis  Burns, of the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in the HMS AENEAS and of South Street, Gosport, was killed. Able Seaman Darrill Balkwill (q.v.), also a Canadian, of HMS ARTEMIS, was critically ill in hospital and died 10 days later. The driver and three other passengers were also injured.

Francis Burns is buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery, Haslar.
