HMS
A8
(1905
-
1920)
HMS A8 (Lt. A H C Candy) was lost off Plymouth on 8 June 1905 after suffering internal explosions (probably due to battery gases) and losing trim on the surface. There were four survivors: Sub Lt H C Murdock, CPO W R Waller and Acting L Stoker G Watts and the captain, Lt Candy. They were picked up by a boat from the trawler Chanticleer and passed to Torpedo Boat No 80. A8 was later salvaged, refitted and returned to service. A8 was carrying an extra officer and 7 ratings under training.
Lt Candy went on to a successful naval and submarine career and reached the rank of Rear Admiral. He died aged 81 in 1959.
There is an excellent account of the tragedy and subsequent funerals here.
