HMS

E22

 (1915

 -

1916)

HMS E22 (Lt R T Dimsdale in temporary command) sailed from Barrow on 16 November 1915 to join the 8th Flotilla based on the depot ship HMS MAIDSTONE at Harwich for North Sea patrols. E22 was attacked by UB18 on 25 April 1916 while acting in support of forces trying to intercept the German raid on Lowestoft.

Two survivors (ERA Buckingham & Signalman Harrod) were picked up and became POWs in Germany.

The submarine was part of a naval experiment. It carried two Sopwith Seaplanes on its casing that would be floated and then sent to intercept Zeppelins – hence the rails on the casing. The experiment was eventually abandoned.
