HMS

E36

 (1916

 -

1917)

HMS E36 (Lt T B S McGregor-Robertson) was lost with All Hands 19 January 1917 in the North Sea, after colliding with HMS E43 shortly after sailing from Harwich. E43 was ahead of E36 but had to stop to avoid a floating mine and slowed again later in the transit to replace a bridge screen in heavy weather. That night, which was clear but dark, E36 was assumed to still be astern of E43. However, in the darkness a darkened submarine was sighted at very close range crossing the bows of E43.

Collision could not be avoided. E43 suffered slight damage and lost sight of the submarine that she struck. It was later estimated that the other submarine was E36 which was lost with All Hands.
