On 4 September 1915, HMS E7 (Lt Cdr the Hon. Sir Archibald Douglas Cochrane) was attempting a passage through the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmora when the starboard propeller became entangled in the antisubmarine nets at Nagara.  Despite all efforts, the submarine was unable to break free and, to avoid being depth-charged to destruction, the Commanding Officer surfaced the submarine to abandon ship and then scuttle her.

All of the crew survived this action and were made Prisoners of War; however, four died later while in captivity and are listed here.

During the First World War, Sir Archibald Douglas Cochrane was mentioned in dispatches three times and awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Bar. He survived the War, imprisonment by the Turks (from which he escaped) and, later, went into a career in Parliament as a Scottish MP. Later still, Sir Archibald Douglas Cochrane, GCMG, KCSI, DSO* was appointed Governor of Burma from 1936 until 1941. He died in 1958.
