HMS H49 (Lt R E Coltart, DSC) sailed from Harwich on 17 October 1940 to patrol in the North Sea. She was due to return on 28 October.
H49 was sighted and eventually sunk with only one survivor following depth charge attacks by German submarine chasers UJ 116 and UJ 118. The survivor, L Sto GW Oliver, was picked up by one of the German ships and interned as a PoW in Germany. He was repatriated to the UK in 1945.
