1940)

HMS PHOENIX (Lt Cdr G Nowell) sailed from Alexandria on 3 July 1940 for a patrol area off Sicily. Nothing was heard from her after a wireless message received on the night of 14 July. PHOENIX is believed to have attacked the Italian tanker Dora on 16 July off Santa Croce, Sicily, and was depth charged in a counterattack by the Italian torpedo boat ALBATROS. PHOENIX was lost with All Hands and declared missing on 21 July 1940.
