HMS
STONEHENGE
(1943
-
1944)

HMS STONEHENGE (Lt D S McN Verschoyle-Campbell) arrived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1943 and sailed for her third and last patrol on 25 February 1944. Her patrol area was the northern part of the Malacca Strait.
Nothing further was heard from STONEHENGE, and she failed to return to Trincomalee on 20 March. It is assumed that she was mined between 2 and 16 March. Her commanding officer was the youngest officer in command of a submarine. He joined submarines in 1940 and undertook his command course ( Perisher ) in 1943.
