1967)

HMS TALLY HO was built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness, laid down on 25 March 1942 and commissioned on 12 April 1943. The submarine, under the command of Lt Cdr Leslie Bennington, DSO, DSC, conducted war patrols in the North Sea and Bay of Biscay, enroute to the Mediterranean where a further patrol was conducted.  She then proceeded via the Suez Canal to the Far East, arriving at Colombo on 14 October 1943.

Nine war patrols were conducted from Trincomalee, mostly in the Malacca Straits, sinking a number of Japanese merchant ships, junks, a submarine chaser and a minelayer. A number of special operations were also conducted.

On 24 February 1944, TALLY HO was rammed by a Japanese torpedo boat, causing severe damage to her port ballast tanks, however she managed to dive and escape. The submarine was docked in Trincomalee and repairs were completed by 27 April 1944.

During the 8th Far East war patrol, on 6 October 1944, the Japanese auxiliary submarine chaser Cha 2 was engaged with gunfire and sunk  however the Gunnery Officer, Lt D J Adams was hit by return fire from Cha 2 and died from his wounds later that day.

TALLY HO completed her 9th patrol on 23 November 1944 and departed Trincomalee bound for UK and refit, arriving in Plymouth on 18 January 1945. After training and trials in the Clyde area, she departed the Holy Loch on 27 October 1945 for the Far East, arriving in Hong Kong on 25 December 1945.

The submarine was laid up for a while after the war, but later returned to service, finally being paid off and scrapped in 1967.

  1. My late father PW Dillon was a telegraphist/ ASDIC operator in HMS Tally Ho in 1942:- in fact during its whole tour sailing from Trincomalee.

Sadly, my father barely talked about his service. I know the actions he experienced weighed heavily upon him even to his death at 85 ✌️🇬🇧
