HMS X22 (Lt B M McFarlane) was engaged in a towing exercise with HMS SYRTIS in stormy weather in the Pentland Firth, north of mainland Scotland, on 7 February 1944. The OOW of HMS SYRTIS was washed over the side and SYRTIS attempted to turn round to recover him. Unfortunately, in doing so, SYRTIS rammed X22 which sank with all hands.
