TRITON
(1928
-
1942)
The Greek submarine RHS TRITON (Lieutenant E Kongogiannis RHN) was sunk on 16 November 1942 by the German destroyer Hermes (former Greek Vassilefs Georgios) and submarine chaser UJ2102 in the Aegean Sea.
During an epic five-and-a-half-hour battle, 49 depth charges were fired at TRITON and she was rammed twice. TRITON fired torpedoes at her pursuers and the engagement ended with a close quarter’s exchange of gunfire, during which even hand guns were used. Thirty survivors were taken prisoner.
