HMS

TURBULENT

 (1941

 -

1943)

HMS TURBULENT (Cdr J W Linton) sailed from Algiers on 24 February 1943 to a patrol area in the Tyrrhenian Sea. On 1 March, she attacked and sank the Italian steamship San Vincenzo, of 865 tons, off Paola. She was then ordered to the East coast of Corsica, with instructions to coast-crawl to the Southeast corner of Sardinia, and report from there. This she failed to do.

From Italian records it is evident that on 11 March she had attacked the Italian steamer Mafalda, eight miles off Bastia, missing with two torpedoes. Subsequently, she was hunted by anti-submarine craft sent out from Bastia. At 0900 on 12 March a submarine was seen to break surface by one of the searching craft, and was attacked by gunfire and depth-charges, forcing her to submerge. She was considered to have been sunk.

The submarine was listed as lost on 23 March 1943 when she became overdue.

Commander Tubby Linton was awarded the Victoria Cross for his patrols in HMS TURBULENT during 1942.
