Merseyside Submariners Association, in conjunction with Wallasey RNA, are marking the 85th Anniversary of the loss of HMS Thetis.

The submarine sank during a trial dive in Liverpool Bay on June 1, 1939, due to the inadvertent flooding of her torpedo tubes. The flooding was caused by a combination of technical malfunctions and human error. Despite efforts to save her, 99 of the 103 crew perished. The incident led to major changes in submarine safety procedures and design.

As a significant year, both associations are travelling to the Thetis Memorial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery in Holyhead on Saturday 1st June to remember the submariners lost onboard.

Memorial service will commence at 1200 at the memorial in the cemetery.
