Petty Officer Wesley McGuinness of the Royal Navy Submarine Service has struck gold at the prestigious International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Commonwealth Championships, held this month in Sun City, South Africa. Representing the Royal Navy on the international stage, McGuinness not only competed at an elite level but also made an inspiring return after a major injury sidelined him just two years ago.
In 2022, McGuinness suffered a complete tear of his distal bicep, an injury that many athletes would find career-ending. However, through sheer determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of his network, he has made an extraordinary comeback. Not only did he return to the sport he loves, but he also delivered a standout performance that earned him a coveted Commonwealth gold medal.
Reflecting on the journey, McGuinness was both humble and thankful:
“To come back from such a difficult injury and produce these results is incredibly humbling. I couldn’t have done it without my support network and the backing of the Royal Navy. Their encouragement helped me push through the tough times and stand tall on this international stage.”
The championship victory marks an incredible high in McGuinness’s powerlifting career, and he’s already setting his sights on even greater accomplishments in the future:
“I am extremely proud to be finishing this year’s powerlifting journey with such a massive achievement. This gold has fuelled my ambitions for 2025, and I look forward to competing with even more strength and determination.” McGuinness’s success is a testament not only to his personal resilience but also to the Royal Navy’s commitment to supporting its personnel in their athletic pursuits. His victory is an inspiration to all within the Navy community and beyond. He would like to take this opportunity to thank The Submarine Family and RNRMC for all their support this year, it has played a huge part in this result.
