Captain James (known as Jim) Simpson, a Marine Engineer Submariner in the Royal Navy, tragically took his own life in 2020. ‘HELP – Jim’s Story’ was set up by Jim’s family and friends who are driven to raise awareness and understanding around mental health.

This latest bench is part of a series of unveilings in military bases around the country, to act as a physical and visible reminder of the importance of self-care and positive wellbeing. The initiative was inspired by the Netflix show ‘Afterlife’, in which Ricky Gervais’ character often visits the graveyard where his wife is buried and sits on a bench; while talking to her, he openly contemplates the value of his life.

The bench displays a QR code which, when scanned, will signpost to all the wider mental health charities.
